2 Samuel describes the kingdom of David. Raised to the throne of Judah first, he reigned in Hebron for seven and a half years; then over the other tribes of Israel for thirtythree more years. He is a type of Christ reigning over Israel and subduing the nations. However, we see a shocking moral failure in the life of David and in this he utterly fails in representing Christ. The principle of God's grace and government are brought to light in His dealings with His servant. David received forgiveness for his transgressions but he is told, "The sword shall never depart from thy house," which is fulfilled in his subsequent history.

The governmental consequences of David's sin should impress us deeply that God cannot ignore the disobedience of His own. David, though a true believer, fails in maintaining God's rule on earth. What a contrast to the coming glorious kingdom of the Lord Jesus Christ!
