The Opened Heavens seems to be filled with meditations on the person of Christ such as this one. “The counsel of God is busy in crowning Jesus. It is the delight of the counsel of God to crown Him—it is the delight of the Spirit of God to exhibit Him as crowned—and it is the delight of faith to see Him crowned. God the Spirit, and the faith of the poor, believing sinner, all gather round Him, either to crown Him or to delight in seeing Him crowned.” You will find this little volume to be brief and meditative but not comprehensive. You would be better to turn to An Exposition of the Epistle to the Hebrews by W. Kelly for that. However, it does give a refreshing view of Christ in the epistle and a good overview of key doctrines presented here. Instead of dwelling on details, it gets to the heart of the epistle. Perhaps presenting Christ is essential when writing about the Book of Hebrews. Bellett certainly does it well in this little volume. My mind’s eye is filled at the moment with the shining face of a Spanish-speaking friend after he finished the Spanish translation. His heart had been filled with Christ. G. V. Wigram says, “There are some who, because the epistle is not descriptive of us as the church, see nothing in it for us. Truly it is not about us; it is only about Christ.”
