Worship—hardly any two people can define it or define it the
same way as presented in Hebrews. The vast majority of professed
Christians turn to Jewish ritual as how to worship
today—to a greater or lesser extent. But Christian worship is far
different and is contrasted particularly in the book of Hebrews. If
we don’t understand our high position today—boldness to enter
heaven itself, directly before the throne of grace, spiritually, with
no more conscience of sin, our sins purged away—we will never
appreciate the blessedness of Christianity compared with the
“distance” and “uncertainty” given in Old Testament ritual and
procedures. We will not see what a slur these human ideas are
to our blessed Lord! Yet an understanding of those Old Testament
rituals gives us much insight into what is today’s reality.

Although the subject is far greater than what is presented in this
little book, we were blessed in preparing this writing from the
mid-1800s for a 21st century audience. We think you will likewise
be thrilled as maybe for the first time or maybe as a reminder,
the wonders of Christian worship are brought before us.

We believe the writer is James L. Harris (1793-1877), a Church
of England minister who left that position to simply gather with
those gathered to the name of the Lord Jesus. Not much is recorded
of his life except that his books were recommended as
scholarly and helpful.
